Lunchtime SeminarsThursday 27 May, 1pm Room 228, 2nd Floor, 234 Queensberry Street, Carlton Social Insurance Reform in China with Dr Mike Zhang Dr Mike Zhang comes from China. He is Deputy director of Overall Policy Decision Department, Office for Rebuilding the Economic System, Jiangsu Provincial Government. He completed his Ph.D. on governance structure of township-level governments at Nanjing University. His chief responsibility is to research the policies on social security, employment, public health, enterprise and government reform. Through a very competitive examination, he was awarded a Scholarship by the Government to do research abroad for one year as a visiting scholar. Presentation Synopsis 'China has the largest population in the world and is transiting from the planned economy to a market-oriented economy. Will the transformation be success? Can China maintain social stability in the future? In order to answer these questions, we should examine its social insurance system. In this presentation, I will discuss the history of the Chinese social security system and its social consequences, discuss the models, drawbacks and dilemmas of current social insurance programs, and how to reform the system and rebuild the incentive structure of social security. The presentation will also examine the main differences between Australian and Chinese social security systems.' - Dr Mike
